A Trades Council (or Trade Union Council) is a local organisation of rank and file trade unionists from branches and workplaces. They are members of the many trade unions in an area. They come together for united action.

The local area covered in London is a Borough or Boroughs. Outside London it can be a town, city or local government area.

The Trades Council serves as a forum for ideas and policies to be developed; as a network of trade union contacts; and as a way of building solidarity in action, backing each other in disputes and campaigns. Its a place for sharing lessons and experiences. It's a body to help organising.
